Boston Shreds: A Listicle Highlighting Local Artists

By Erin Christie

During the summer of 2020, The Boston Globe published a (quite tone-deaf piece) about the supposed “peak” of Boston’s music scene, where the author yearns for yesteryear and salivates at the thought of a time when Aerosmith and other classic rockers topped the radio charts. As the writer notes, that time is long gone — which is obviously factual — but, as he fails to mention, though it is, that certainly doesn’t mean that Boston is lacking in musical prowess in the present day. Rather, the city’s musical greats are just hiding beneath the surface, largely because bigger publications like The Globe fail to give them the time of day.

Despite this particular article’s fixation on the quintessence of rock’n’roll, Aerosmith definitely isn’t the end-all, be-all regarding Boston’s excellent musical repertoire. That said, I crowdsourced to gather insight on the contemporary Boston artists that some of my peers believe deserve more exposure. The list below is what I gathered — included is each artist’s most recent release (if you feel inclined, make a purchase on the next Bandcamp Friday, February 5!).

This list hardly covers how many great artists exist throughout Boston. Get in tune with the local scene by reading up over at publications such as DIG Boston, Boston Hassle, and The Boston Compass.
